Module 3: Grades and Communicating about Grades

many raised hands

As teachers we all have to assess student work and communicate how well students have met our requirements and expectations. This calls for both communicating expectations and recording the results of student work. Some of our assessments gets recorded in our electronic gradebook, Gradequick. We use the gradebook to record assignments and grades, and to see how our students are going over time. We also use it to communicate progress on all assignments to students and their parents, by posting grades from the Gradequick gradebook to Edline. We can even modify how these reports look if we don’t like the defaults. There are also reports that can be useful for us to use, such as a blank gradebook page with student names (for recording observations, for example).(Picture from www.3cperformance.fr)

Edline isn’t just for progress reports, though. Since it is our “face” outside of class (particularly for our tech-savvy students and parents), we want our Edline page to be attractive and useful.

Finally, since sometimes we need to communicate with words, rather than just the grades on the Edline progress reports, it’s helpful to be able to email individual parents or all parents in a class.

In the modules that follow, we’ll see how to do all these things, and then practice. Let’s get started. (Important: Gradequick and Edline pages are not available throughout the summer, since the old classes are removed and the new classes may not have yet been added for the fall. This means you may need to go through these modules during the school year.)
