Making Edline pages appealing and useful

Page history last edited by Fran Lo 13 years, 7 months ago

Objectives:

  • Learners will create attractive, useful Edline class pages.
  • Learners will format Edline progress reports so they contain useful information.

Background

In a digital age, how we present ourselves online is often the first way people “meet” us. Do they see something generic, or do they see something that represents us? Do we provide an interesting and relevant picture that encourages a student to learn more about our course? Do we provide useful information about the course itself, such as a basic description and syllabus? Do we provide useful links to related information that will help students who may need additional practice or who are interested in learning more? Do we want to provide resources like audio recordings (called podcasts) or PowerPoint presentations for students to refer to? Do we provide copies of study guides for our organizationally-challenged students (and their parents)?

Activities

Adding a picture to Edline

Here's all you have to do to add a picture to your Edline page . This video will show you what to do. If you prefer written instructions, these are given below.

1. Find a picture that you like on the Internet . The picture can't be too large, or Edline won't use it. Too small and it will look grainy. Try for a size of around 50 K to 100 K - you'll see the picture size if you're searching for pictures with Google or Bing). If this is unfamiliar to you, go to the section on Using pictures.

2. Sign into Edline and go to the class you want to add the picture to. (Yes, I know I ended with a preposition.)

3. Roll your mouse over Command Center (on the left) and click on Manage Class.

4. Scroll down to Image and click on Browse.

5. You're now in your own computer's files. Find the picture you want and double-click on it (or left-click once and then click on Open). You'll see that the address of where this file is stored now shows next to the Browse button.

6. Now click on Save. If the picture is too small in size, it will look grainy, so you may want to find a different picture. If Edline tells you the picture is too big, you'll need to find another picture.

7. If you don't like how the picture looks, just repeat the steps. Remember that this is the first thing people will look at on a class Edline page, so putting in a bit more time on the picture is definitely worthwhile.

Adding documents and links to Edline pages

Adding documents and links to your Edline class pages is much easier than adding pictures. Click here to see how to do it. Then add useful links and documents (such as the Syllabus, study guides, rubrics for important assignments) to your Edline pages.

Using last year’s class materials on Edline

Without you having to do a thing, Edline saves the pictures and course descriptions for every class. So when it’s time to set up your Edline pages in the fall, you don’t have to do much if you want to retrieve these. In fact, if you have other materials you want to transfer from year to year, whatever was left on your class webpage at the end of the school year should be available for next year. But because you can only do this at the start of the school year, you will need to wait until then to do this.

Here's how to use last year's picture and description for this year's class (do in fall):

1. Roll over My Classes with your mouse and select the class you want to work with.

2. Roll over My content and click on Old class materials.

3. You'll see a listing of all your classes for the past few years. Look for the modified date (on the right) so you can find the most recent date. Click on the class with the most recent date.

4. You'll see all the materials associated with this class as of that date. The ones you definitely want are. Group info:picturename & group descriptionlinks. Check these two items. The other items may include items you want to modify, or only use later in the year. You can copy them over and delete them from the class page if you decide that you don't want them, or just wait and copy them over later. and

5. After you have checked the materials you want, click on Copy to (don't use Move as then you may lose this copy for good). DON'T SKIP THIS STEP.

6. You are given a list of classes. Click on the class you want to add the picture and description to. If you have more than one class, hold down the Ctrl key (lower left keyboard) and click on each of the classes you want.

7. Click on OK.

As you use materials and then want to remove them from Edline, don’t just delete them. Instead, same them to My file locker (when editing, click on the resource in question, then click on Move to and click on My file locker). You can move these stored materials to your new Edline page next year.

Now assess yourself. Did you add pictures, documents and links to make your Edline pages more interesting, attractive, and useful? Take a moment to reflect about adding materials to your Edline class pages in your blog or notebook.

Checklist

  • Add pictures to your Edline pages
  • Add documents and links to Edline pages
  • Add last year’s pictures and class description to Edline pages
  • Reflect about adding materials to class pages.
